First-Generation Bulls

What is First-Gen?

While the standard definition of a first-generation student includes an individual both of whose parents did not complete a baccalaureate degree, within the USF First-Gen Bulls community we widen that definition to expand on the experience. You are a First-Gen Bull if:

  • You are a student who resided or received support from only one parent, who did not complete a bachelor's degree.
  • You have siblings who completed their degree, but your parents/guardians have not.
  • Your primary caregiver(s) did not graduate from a four-year college in the United States.
  • Your primary caregiver(s) completed their degrees when over the age of 25.
  • Your primary caregiver(s) earned a degree as a non-traditional student.

Aside from the details, you are forging a new path and there is no single story that defines what it means to be first-gen, especially within the USF First-Gen Bulls community.

First-gen is not just a label—it’s an experience shaped by resilience, determination, and growth.

You are in Good Company

First-generation students are leaders, innovators, and changemakers.

Across campuses and communities, first-gen individuals are:

  • Student leaders and organization founders
  • Faculty and staff members
  • Professionals and industry leaders
  • Mentors, advocates, and role models

You might even find that your professors, advisors, or campus leaders were first-generation students too.

Talk to our Team

Our mission is to partner with students as they navigate the transition into college life, offering guidance and support throughout this exciting journey. With so many offices, organizations, and events available at the university, it’s completely natural to feel uncertain about where to begin or how to find the right resources.

The First-Gen Team works alongside students to help them make sense of it all—connecting them with the tools, people, and opportunities that can make a real difference. Asking questions and reaching out for support is a smart and expected part of the college experience.
