BLUEMATH: AN OPEN-SOURCE, PYTHON FRAMEWORK WITH INTERACTIVE NOTEBOOKS FOR STATISTICAL ANALYSIS AND SIMULATION OF COASTAL CLIMATE HAZARDS IN A CHANGING CLIMATE

Instructors: Fernando Mendez, Laura Cagigal, Alba Ricondo. Close to the date, we will probably include 1 or 2 more instructors

Description: (https://gitlab.com/geoocean/bluemath) is an innovative, open-source repository of Python-coded tools. The repository is also accessible from the muti-user cloud-based Jupyter Hub environment, leveraging shared computational resources and the user-friendly interface of Jupyter Notebooks. BlueMath integrates state-of-the art statistical techniques and high-fidelity numerical model wrappers in a system framework that includes from standalone models with straightforward applications to hybrid model-tool combinations that produce comprehensive climate services. In the course, we will provide the theoretical foundations as well as hands-on exercises of downscaling of coastal hazards, combining climate-based statistical models with fast emulators of numerical models.

Delft3D Coastal Sediment Modeling

Instructors: Kees Nederhoff (Deltares USA)

Description: This full-day course introduces sediment transport and morphodynamic modeling with Delft3D Flexible Mesh, using the D-Morphology module. The morning covers the theory behind the model: transport formulations for grain sizes from mud to gravel, and the way waves and currents combine to move sediment along a coast. In the afternoon, participants set up and run their own coupled flow-wave-morphology model and work through the choices that decide whether such a model is usable in practice (morphological acceleration factor, spin-up time, sediment availability). The course is aimed at engineers and researchers with some background in hydrodynamic or wave modeling. Prior Delft3D experience is helpful but not required. Participants should bring a Windows laptop; we provide a temporary course license.

Field Techniques for Characterizing Coastal Sediments

Instructors: Dan Ciarletta, Julie Bernier, Evan Goldstein, Jennifer Miselis

Description: This field- and conference room-based, full-day short course will introduce field, laboratory, and analytical techniques for characterizing sediments in coastal systems. In the morning, attendees will have the opportunity to see beach-based demonstrations of geological, sedimentological, and geotechnical sediment sampling techniques by academic, governmental, and private industry experts. In the afternoon, attendees will return to the conference hotel to inspect and compare samples and learn about the analytical and geophysical techniques used to transform sediment samples into integrated datasets that can be used to evaluate the geomorphic evolution, sediment transport processes, and geotechnical variability of coastal systems across a range of spatial and temporal scales.
