Cultivating a Culture of Excellence: Four Commitments That Guide Our Work

As Undergraduate Studies and Student Affairs move forward together under the leadership of Dr. Allison Crume, we have a unique opportunity to strengthen our collective impact through a shared vision, common purpose, and unwavering commitment to student success. Our work extends beyond the programs we offer and services we provide. It is about creating an environment where every student has the opportunity to thrive, graduate, become a lifelong learner, and contribute as an engaged citizen.

To achieve this vision, we will cultivate a culture centered on four commitments: Accountability, Communication, Collaboration, and a Growth Mindset. These commitments define not only what we do, but also how we lead, partner, and enhance the student experience.

Accountability is our promise to students, colleagues, and the university community that we will pursue excellence with integrity and intention. It calls us to assess our impact, use data to inform decisions, and uphold the policies and standards that support institutional excellence. Accountability also challenges us to measure success not simply by what we accomplish, but by the meaningful difference we make in students’ lives. Through continuous assessment and responsible stewardship of resources, we build trust, improve effectiveness, and demonstrate our commitment to student success.

Communication connects our people, purpose, and progress. Transparent, timely, and authentic communication promotes understanding, builds confidence, and fosters belonging across our units. It also encourages us to tell our story by celebrating innovation, recognizing student achievements, and highlighting the transformative work taking place every day. Sharing successes and lessons learned strengthens partnerships and reinforces the value of our collective contributions to the university’s mission.

Collaboration reflects our belief that our greatest accomplishments are achieved together. The complex needs of today’s students require us to look beyond organizational boundaries and create solutions across departments and disciplines. By leveraging our collective expertise and embracing diverse perspectives, we can develop innovative, inclusive, and student-centered partnerships. Working together intentionally allows us to create a more seamless and holistic experience for every student.

Finally, a Growth Mindset supports continuous improvement and transformational leadership. It encourages curiosity, adaptability, learning from both success and failure, and investment in professional development. A culture of learning and innovation enables us to respond to changing student needs and the evolving higher education landscape with resilience and purpose.

Together, these commitments form the foundation of the culture we are building and the future we are creating. United by a shared purpose, Undergraduate Studies and Student Affairs will work collectively to advance student success, strengthen meaningful partnerships, and create an environment where every student can grow academically, prepare confidently for a career, and develop personally. Through this shared responsibility, we will help students realize their potential and graduate prepared to contribute thoughtfully and meaningfully to their communities and the world.
