Music Tech Lab (Grades 9-12)

High schoolers at USF Tampa will explore music production, sound design, and perform their creations in a final showcase.

Music Tech Lab, located on the USF Tampa campus, offers high school students an exciting opportunity to explore the intersection of music and technology. In this hands-on program, students learn to create, record, and produce music using professional-grade software and equipment.

They are introduced to digital audio workstations, sound design, and recording techniques, while also gaining insight into the music production process. The lab encourages creativity and technical skills, giving students a unique experience in both music composition and modern technology.

What to Expect

Create with Modern Instruments

Your child will experiment with computers, iPads, DJ decks, guitars, drum sets, and more to create their own music. They'll explore a variety of instruments and tools to find what inspires them the most.

Master Songwriting & Beats

They'll learn songwriting, beat-making, and rapping, discovering how to craft original songs and unique sounds. This creative process allows them to express their individuality through music.

Perform in Small Groups

Students will collaborate with peers, performing together and honing their skills as part of a musical team. They'll develop confidence and teamwork while showcasing their creations.

All Levels, All Fun!

No prior experience is needed—everyone will have a blast making music, with all equipment provided. The focus is on enjoying the experience and growing a passion for music.

Discover the world of music and technology at Music Tech Lab! This immersive experience allows students to unleash their creativity by learning the latest in music production, sound design, and recording techniques.

As a special highlight, on the final Friday of the program, parents are invited to join us for a showcase where students will perform and present what they've learned throughout the week. It’s a unique opportunity to see their skills in action and celebrate their achievements.

Where is Music Tech Lab located?

The Music Tech Lab is held at the USF Tampa Campus, within the USF School of Music. The camp's location is 3755 USF Holly Drive MUS 101, Tampa, FL 33620.

After registering for Music Tech Lab, when will I start receiving logistical details, including pick-up and drop-off times?

You will receive several reminder emails leading up to the camp start date. Emails will be sent 60, 30, 14, 7, and 1 day prior, each containing important information to ensure a successful experience at USF Music Tech Lab.

 Staff & Safety 

Who are the USF Faculty/Staff who will be leading USF Music Tech Lab?

The Music Tech Lab program at the ÐÜèAVÃâ·Ñ is led by Kenrick Wagner, a member of USF’s Music Faculty in Commercial Music. In his role, Wagner designs, builds, and promotes innovative contemporary commercial music curriculum, with a focus on hip-hop/rap, EDM, and R&B. An accomplished social entrepreneur and hip-hop artist with over 15 years of professional experience, he has worked extensively as a music educator, performer, producer, recording artist, and published author. Wagner is also the CEO of Project Gametime LLC, a mission-driven organization dedicated to character development and music education for youth and adults. His work has been featured by Forbes Magazine, Fox 5 News, and Beyoncé’s BeyGOOD Foundation, and he has delivered keynote presentations for organizations including the Modern Band Summit, NJSACC, and Boston University.

Are staff background-checked and trained?

 Yes. All staff undergo Level 2 background checks and complete USF’s youth protection and safety training.

 Cancellation & Changes 

What is the cancellation, transfer, and refund policy for USF Youth Experiences programs?

If you need to cancel or transfer a camp registration, please email youthxp@usf.edu.

Cancellations or transfer requests received at least 15 business days prior to the camp start date will be eligible for a refund or transfer to another available camp, minus any administrative or processing fees. Cancellations or transfer requests received within 15 business days of the camp start date are not eligible for a refund or transfer. No refunds will be issued after a camp has begun, regardless of the number of days attended or participation level. No refunds will be issued if a participant is dismissed from camp due to a violation of the camp’s conduct policy or code of behavior.

We make every effort to run all camps exactly as scheduled. In the unlikely event it becomes necessary to cancel, postpone, or combine camps, or change a camp location, you will be notified by email or phone. Please ensure your contact information is up to date. If USF cancels a camp, you will receive a full refund. If USF reschedules a camp, you will have the option to receive a full refund or transfer to the new session.
